Not much difference between a 35 and 40x series... but the 35 has a TV/kick-down cable, the 4x series uses a vac modulator and electric kick-down. Same rebuild kit for all 3x and 4x series. 36 and 37 use a vac modulator/electric kick-down also. 1965 and 66 M-8 cast iron trannys use the TV cable also. Those are usually referred to as "M-10" models, but I don't think that is on the data plate... don't recall now.

in a nut shell, you need a shift linkage for a floor shift and a flex plate for the cast iron trans to work with whichever converter you have.
we have done these kind of swaps many times.
shoot me a pm with your number if you would rather talk than type.  thanx  rick

Whatever you do, if you use a M-11 use the kickdown (momentary) switch for the gas pedal.  Mine is under the hood and the switch is depressed by a paddle on the throttle linkage off the firewall.

Electric kick down. Switch is mounted inside the car at top of accelerator pedal bracket.
Single blue wire with fabric protective covering goes to terminal on transmission case.
Long time AMC fan. Ambassador 343, AMX 390, Hornet 360, Spirit 304 and Javelin 390. All but javelin bought new.

ID: 3.134"

AM Warner Gear iron case:
----------------------------------------

(listed by Alto as Ford FMX parts, page 25 in High Performance Catalog)

"Red Eagle" 'frictions':

pn# 049740 (front clutch)
.061" thick
quantity 5
45Tooth
OD: 5.250"
(note: SM)

pn# 049742 (rear clutch)
.080" thick
quantity 4
45Tooth
OD: 5.250"
(note: SM)

pn# 049742PL
.080" thick
quanitity 4
45Tooth

(note: PL = grooved)

"Kolene" 'steels':

pn# 023701K (same pn front and rear clutches)
.068" thick
quanitity 3-4 front 4-5 rear
54Tooth
ID: 3.900"

pn# 023701UP4
= 'unit pack' having 4 Kolene steels

----------------------

(same pn#s listed by Alto in Ford AOD, page 18 in High Performance Parts Catalog)

pn# 049740UP5
= 'unit pack' having 5 .061" (SM?) frictions

pn# 049742UP5
= 'unit pack' having 5 .080" (SM?) frictions

pn#049750AHP ?
-----------------------

Edit: If you need replacement bands for your M11 or M12 Shift Command units (or for earlier iron case Flash-O-Matics)
-Both bands (front and rear) are identical in every detail when comparing all AM Flash-O-Matic & Shift Command iron case units to Ford 'small case' Ford-O-Matic and Cruise-O-Matic.
Hence, if you need new bands, shop for Ford 1950-'58 Ford-O-Matic and '59-'66 Cruise-O-Matic small case band (front and rear bands appear to be identical and should be 100% interchangeable)
