Back from Brainard, I ran the fastest I've ever run at that track shifting at 6200 and going through traps at 6200 11.34 at 116.8 that was not so good air. Going to Rock Falls on the 29th of this month that's where I ran 11.26 it's known for faster runs due to good air. Converter will easily stall to 4200 now.

My hubby says if you get a taller rear tire, it will change your gear ratio without having to change out the gears.

Hi guys, been busy so I haven't been on the forum for a while. Just got back from Rock Falls Raceway with my best run at 11.25 @ 116.7 mph. That's my all time record now. I looked at my tac just before the finish and it read 6000. My motor hp dropped off at 6200 on the dyno. I have 4.10 gears and 27.3" tires. I'm thinking I'm running out of gear. Also my 60 foot is 1.52. What do you guys think on changing to 3.73 gears? My mph just seems lopsided compared to other cars at the track that were more mph and less ET.??

your mph is way slow. should be at around 128-134mph if you have a picture of car going across finish line tri to estimate ground clearance. put car on alignment rack , jack it up to same height and check alignment. that could be some of the problem. if you are running e85 you might be way to lean on top end. you should be around 6 to 8 numbers bigger then gas jets.and if you are running a power valve get rid of it, if this is the case you will need to jet up a couple more numbers Good Luck Gary.

I think you are nosing power off too early for those heads. I don't like your cam and carb combo. I wish you were in my area, I'd let you try out my QFT E-85 Q-850. FWIW, the 850 from Quick Fuel has a Pro Form built center section.. however the passages in it are opened up differently for Ethanol, it is a specific E-85 piece that works with the metering blocks. That being said, I think you may be able to crack into 10's with the 750 carb. Dad did it on his 401.. but he also picked up more than a tenth when he used my 850.

You should be flowing more air than me through your heads easily.. and my jetting is 88/96 with a power valve. Mine are just Edelbrocks with 2.05 intake valves, the bowls blended by me to smooth the larger valves in, and gasket matched to SCE intake gaskets. My car weighs 200 lbs more than yours (3050 no driver) and runs 11.0's at 121 MPH. Our 1/8 mile times are close to the same, I run 7.0's at 97 MPH unless I get a really sticky track, then I run 6.98ish. My car should have had 10's in it this year at Cordova, but my 60' times were off by a half a tenth all day. I think after 175 passes my Hoosiers are falling off.

I am surprised your shift point is so low. Your exact power peak should not be your shift point, you want to drive through it some. I shift mine at 6850.. and I only have a little bit more camshaft than your combo. Shifting below 6500 is an easy way for me to dump at least a tenth or more if I need to sandbag for a bracket race, though I normally do not do so, I prefer to run an honest dial and drive the wheels off the car.

I had my shift light set at 6000 this last time out but the track where I was racing wasn't prepped too well so I was shifting way early like 5000-5500 so I could grab the wheel.
Doing that was giving me times of 11.32, 11.27 and 11.25. My last run I managed to hold out till the 6000 shift points and it slowed to 11.36 that was a perfect run with 1.52 60 foot and no lifting and hitting 6000 just before the finish.

My 71 AMX powered by a mild 401 runs 11.09 @ 119 with a 904 (2.7 something 1st gear) tranny with a transbrake , 8" ATI convertor , 9" rearend with 4.11 gears . Race weight is 3600LBS . The factory iron 993 heads were ported by Ken Parkman and flow 255 . I run a hyd cam on a 10 to 1 compression 401 and shift at 5800rpm (finish line at just over 6000 rpm).I drive on the streets with 87 octane fuel and race at the track with 94 . I was running out of rpm about 100ft from the finish line when I broke my personal best record . I changed out the Lunati hyd lifters for a set of Crane hyd anti pump ups and it pulls all the way to the finish line now . I think I can break into the 10.9's if I can get to the track 1 more time this year on a good air day . I run a 850 Holley with proform body 76/84 jets , 38 degrees total timing . 28 x 11.5 x 15 slicks . Best 60ft to date is 1.49 .
