My drive shaft is about an inch shorter than I'd really like. I can't even tell you now whether it was my measurements or the shop that built it, but here I am. I should really have it re-tubed, but I was wondering if there's anything else that might help out as well. I could probably do a shim but I only have a few hundredths to work with before running out of threads on the end of the pinion shaft. Does anyone know if there is a longer yoke I could use?

You cant really shim the pinion, since the yoke and crush sleeve put the preload on the pinion bearings. As far as I know, AMC used the same yoke on all AMC20 rears. there's nothing available there. There may be a longer yoke for the TH350, but you'd have to dig into the spec books. You still may have a problem with the leverage the yoke would put on the output shaft of the trans. A re-tube is probably the best long-term option.

Yeah, a longer transmission yoke is an option, but I think I'd wear out the output shaft bushing faster that way. So you can't put maybe a .20 shim just behind the yoke? Yeah, I definitely need to rebuild the driveshaft. I may tackle the job myself and take it somewhere to have it balanced.

I'm seeing a handful of aluminum driveshafts on Craigslist for sale. I wonder if it'd be a decent upgrade having one of those shortened. I've never run an aluminum driveshaft and don't know if the benefits are all that significant.
