76 hornet 4.2
I just did a tune up and this really has me stumped swapped out plugs, wires, did compression check, filed cap and rotor just a bit with a nail file put it all back together and it'll turn over but not fire What could I have missed? The 12v from the batt to dist is hot. All plugs and wires are correct. I don't remember a wire connected at the distr under "Tach" but could that be it? |

Is the carbon with the spring still functional in the cap? Closing and opening the points with the coil wire close to ground should cause a spark for testing purposes, assuming of course that you have points.

Gotta say it, did you remember to install the rotor? I don't think there's many of us who haven't done that at least once. Yes, I'm guilty as charged.
![]() Also make sure the points are properly grounded to the distributor body. |

I've found new (made in China) rotors with porous holes under the center pin that allowed power straight to ground.

Never took the rotor out, just removed the cap and brightened up the contacts a bit.

'76s used electronic distributors, so it shouldn't be the points!

BID ignition? Unplug and replug the dist connector. (Factory "fix" was to solder the wires instead of that plug)

Ok, had to sideline this but im back at it...its a 76 with a newer msd dist.
I put the original set up back on there old plugs and everything Im getting spark at the plugs but it wont try to fire. Maybe i adjusted the timing by accident?I really need this car going but its cool, Im driving my 65 grand prix till then ;)
