Hello: Just looked at a J4000 yesterday and will probably by it next month. My fist change will be a new exhaust system. It has the free flow manifolds which will stay. It now has some glass packs, dual set up. I want to change back to a single muffler with 3" in and out and 3" tail pipe. Will run 2 1/4" dual pipes and merging together right before going into the muffler. Is using a 3" muffler and tail pipe to much is my main question? I can always drop to a smaller size. The muffler will be a Dyno Max super turbo either way, I like there sound. One other question is any of the jeep guys know the good or bad about the closed steering knuckles? Thanks

I got closed knuckles on my 82 J-10, not stock, the front end is from a early 70s J-10.

The only disadvantages I know of is they have less of a steering angle, and the parts maybe harder to find.

I converted mine to disk brakes, have owned the truck about 14 years, about 4-5 thousand miles a year, with no maintenance issues yet from the front end, so the closed knuckle seems fine to me.

My 66 Jeep has the closed knuckles, too, and I have never had to replace a U-joint inside them. There is a pipe plug in the back of the knuckle and I remove it, pump some grease in, and put the plug back in when I service it.
I had a J10 that I bought new in 1976. It was a good truck and had plenty of power with the 360 and 4 speed truck tranny. Too bad the body started rusting out at 50,000 miles and literally disintegrated just before 100,000 miles.

Well the jeep j4000 i posted about in Feb is now mine. Looks to be in good shape. 360 engine with TH400. Very little rust, mile maker 2 to 4 conversion, lock out hubs many new engine acc parts (alt, fuel pump. holley 1850-2, dual tanks, cap, rotor, wires). Pick it up for $1200.00. HMMM J.E.E.P ( just empty every pocket).

Hi Warbed, the jeep is a 1973 J4500. I'm still in the process of getting it road worthy. Going through the fuel system now.
