OK, to be fair and prove myself right - ..... or wrong....... I went to the 258 that I took out of my SX4 several years ago. For a couple of seasons it sat outside under the lean-to covered by a tarp.
When I pulled the engine (a 1982) it had 160,000 miles on it - original engine, mostly original parts.
I put a second nut on one of the studs and using a box wrench and an open end wrench, locked them against each other. I then put on a short open end wrench and turned the nuts as if to loosen the stud.
It screwed right out. The other stud looks fine and the nut I put back on it several years ago before parking the engine turned right off -
Then I looked at one of the spares on my shelves - and noticed I already had the studs out, then remembered, oh, yeah, when I pulled THAT ONE in the junk yard, the studs screwed right out of the manifold! The nuts were sticky on the studs but the studs came right out, no issue. So that's three of 4 that simply "screwed out". Again, these are 1981 and later, not the earlier ones.
Since I see three intake manifolds sitting waaaaay up high on my shelves, that tells me I should have at least a second exhaust manifold on the shelves buried among all the other stuff like spare heads, blocks, 258 headers and so on.
If I DID have a second spare, I'd consider selling it. I really only need one spare and can pick up another in minutes from the Eagle guys if I wanted one.
So I guess I can back up my thoughts on the studs being a non-player here - I tried one and it came right out, and the other two came out easily at a JUNK YARD in the heat, mud and skeeters. (with no jack, having to do it ALL from above the fender, not under the car)
