I am working on getting a '68 Javelin back on the street. It was in a barn for 20 years; going thru brakes, tires etc. A family member parked it in the barn. A family friend had built the car got the car in the early '70. He blew the original 290 while street racing. He built a healthy 360 with 401 heads, mated to a 727 tranny that has a reverse manual valve body. It was so long ago he does not remember details.

When the motor was built, it got a big cam but still used the stock torque converter.

- What brand/model of auto tranny would have been original to a 1968 Javelin with a 290?

- Does the 360/727 combo use an AMC specced torque converter? Or does it use same torque converter as a Mopar with a 727?

In my searches, it looks like TCI has biggest selection. I did not see any from B&M for AMC.

Since I know some basics, but not details, it seems it is a guessing game to pick a converter. I was looking at 2400rpm, because it seems that is about where the cam comes on.

I know the motor was built with a lumpy but streetable 260 cam. But I do not know any detail past that. Family friend that built motor says it is "torque cam". Motors balanced, Edelbrock Torker from the 1970's, Holley 600 double pumper 4776-2 "Classic". all backed by 355 gears.

So I am looking for a mild torque converter that is streetable.

Either 2500 or 3500 stall would work well and remain streetable. Your are going to have a decent price jump above the 2500 stall. About $200-300 more for the 3600 stall. Hughes and TCI make them though you likely will be special order these days since they are not off the shelf anymore. I ran my 3500 stall TCI behind two different motors with great success. 360 with the comp 292H grind and now a 401 with a custom roller 280 grind. Both cans were above .500 lift. I am selling by drive train motor to rear wheels but may break sell converter separately if nobody wants it as a whole.

I got a Turbo action Pro Series 10" steel stator converter, for sale. Never used it before but it was made for a 727 trans with and a 360 block pumping 500+hp. They say the converter can handle up to 1000hp.

That was 10 inch converter may be a bit more than what is expected on the streets, if going there time to time. I assume, it's 6000 stall.

I have used a 2200 rpm stall converter with the MOPAR based transmissions and yes, the converter is AMC specific. I happen to like the 2200 stall converter on the street with a mild cooking version of an engine.
