Has anyone purchased inside door panels from SMS Auto Fabrics in Oregon?
I bought my seat material and vinyl top material from them and both orders were promptly delivered. In August, I sent them my door panels after confirming the price and expected delivery. I was told 6 to 8 months for completion, which I thought was a bit extreme but went along anyway, they were quick to charge my credit card for the agreed price and here we are nearly 9 months later and no door panels, I have tried to call them repeatedly with no answer, and have sent numerous emails, I have received a couple responses from an employee telling me the delivery is more like 1 year, which I explained who I hade talked to and the promises made...now I do not receive any information at all. Anyone near SMS want to go bang on their door and see if anyone is home!! |

Charging the full amount to your credit card up front just doesn't seem right. A deposit is one thing, but the full amount?

I've bought a few sets of door panels from SMS and both took right around a year to receive. Fortunately they are worth the wait, but the communication is not the best.

I've only bought one set of door panels from them. When I ordered them, they wanted full payment up front and told me it would be 6-8 months. Two months later the panels showed up. I have no idea what business model they are using but in the end, the panels were worth the effort, and patience, to get them.

I've only dealt with SMS once, but it was a very good dealing, and I've followed his posts on lots of other boards.
I dont know the man personally, and for all I know I could have misinterpreted posts he's made over the years, or it could be old outdated info, but it seems like he was a one man show when I dealt with him, and lately is transitioning to a father and son business with the son taking over. It also seems like he's carried separate full time jobs at some points while running his business. No excuses for a lack of response or billing the card in advance or anything, just hoping to shed some light on my interpretation of things. My one dealing with him was a group buy order for a Jeep Comanche headliner. He hand makes the special backer boards for these, and after they all shipped he found an issue with them not fitting as they should. He contacted our group with the issue, explained the situation, ate the cost on the entire group buy, remaking & reshipping every headliner on his own dime before I was even able to install or notice an issue with the "bad" one I had (which he did not ask for back) I've never had a company deal with an issue like that in such a professional manner, and I'd be shocked if he didn't lose money on the entire group buy. I hope I'm not stepping on anyone's toes posting information that's already been aired on other boards, my hope is just to offer up the measure of the man that I've dealt with, if that's any help at all. Either way, good luck with your parts & project, timetable aside, I can't imagine him not holding up his end of the deal in the end. |

They did the door panels for my Ambassador convertible. Like others, I was quoted a 6 to 8 month window when I sent them in with a 50 percent deposit. Actual delivery was a little over a year, but they look great, and in a month or so will be installed on my car. Sure they are expensive, and the wait was long, but if you have a low volume car, they are the only game in town.

Bought door and rear panels for my SC/R clone (also carpet). The carpet shipped immediately. It took about 8 months (I was quoted 6 month wait) for the door panels. They charged 1/2 up front, I was told at order the balance would be charged when they shipped. After 4 months, they charged the balance. I was excited to think I would have them soon. After a couple of weeks, I called and asked for tracking info. They said the balance was charged when they started production, not when they shipped. I waited another 4 months after the balance was charged. They are perfect reproductions and worth the money and wait, but I wish they had been more forthright with their time and billing info.
