I'm putting new front bearings in my 73 Amb. Everything goes in like the TSM says, but there's a fair amount of room between where the inner bearing sits on the inner race and where the wheel seal fits in the hub--enough room for me to pull the bearing up and slide a finger between the bearing and the race. Is there something I'm missing? Some kind of spring? The TSM doesn't show anything like that.

The parts all seem the same, but it was making some bearing noise already so it might not have been set up right to start.

There should be a good bit of room there. As long as the surface where the seal rides on the spindle is clean you should have no issues. There is no spacer between the bearings. The bearings will pull into the race when you tighten the nut.

Did you also change the outer race? I remember back in the 55 Chevy days some people would just change the inner bearing which was a ball type not roller, and they wouldn't last very long because of the outer race also being bad.
I also remember on the Rambler there being quite a space between the seal and bearing. It makes it easy to pack grease in there.

Yeah, all new races and bearings both inner and outer. But the seal isn't going anywhere, being tapped into the hub---even when I tighten the nut there's still a good half inch of play there

As you tighten the nut and spin the wheel it should stop spinning. That's when the bearing clearance has been removed. Then you back off the nut one flat to provide bearing clearance.
If you bottom out the nut and still have play then there is something wrong! If no other parts were changed (spindle or hub) then you have a wrong bearing. Wouldn't be the first time a bearing with the right ID but wrong outer ring were matched up. Take the new bearings out and compare them to the old ones - should always do this first. If you don't have the old bearings - order a new set from someone else to compare. No spacer should be installed and the car should not be driven until this is fixed.

When I tighten down the nut till the wheel no longer spins, the spindle base/splash shield lip is gripping the seal, not the bearing behind it. The bearing is still free to move.

Wrong bearings/spindle or hub combinations.
By what you have posted it's likely wrong bearings. There are narrow and wide taper roller inner and outer cones that will fit each other but the overall bearing width changes. Rock Auto has listings for the bearings with dimensions. If the bearings are correct then a PO changed spindles/hubs or both and your going to need to hunt down what will fit.

THIS. if it's a 73, the OEM disc setup should be a single piston Kelsey-Hayes. If it has Bendix calipers, then that is from a later model car, but still should use the same bearings, even though the rotor is different. If it's neither Bendix or Kelsey, then yeah, you've got to do some figuring out to do, unfortunately.
