What Identifies the V8 block as a '72 and up? I am looking at getting an extra 360 block and I prefer the 904/727 over the BW trans so don't want to end up with an earlier block. Thanks!

There's no difference in the block. If you find an engine with a 4-bolt crank pulley, that will be a'73 and up crank that fits the Chrysler trannies. (72 also fits, but has a 3-bolt crank pulley-not as easy to distinguish from a '70-71) Edited by ramblinrev - Nov/13/2019 at 8:00am |

It is just a block & main caps. So you can put a later crank in an earlier block and bolt up a 904/727? I thought the bolt pattern was different on the block to bolt up a BW than a 904/727?

Block are all the same. The rear of the crank flange is different. The change came in 71. As long as your crank has the stepped rear flange you're good to go. I'd definitely have the crank alignment checked- align bored.

Not even knowing what the individual is planning, why recommend a line bore? It's not a small block Chevy. |

Heavy, there was a 360 block given away to Mean, and it’s cap set was incomplete. That may be where that recommendation came from.

Didn't notice anything saying it's an incomplete cap set.

Yes. A '72 and later 304 is the same crankshaft if you can't find one from a 360. The rotating assembly will need balanced regardless.

This is an AMC block and not a Chev. Unless you have no experience building an AMC and have money to burn - then go ahead and have it line bored.
If you have built a few AMC's before you will know that the bearing caps are very consistent between engines/years and careful trial measurement/assembly with a replacement cap will tell you IF you need to line bore. In almost all cases you will find line boring is not required and tolerances are within specification with new bearings. If you ask a machine shop to line bore they will, required or not as they will not take the time to do trial measurement/assembly. My experiences.
