What bore will the pistons be for? I'm asking to determine availability of rings.

Seems we both have the same set of questions. It is always best to know what we are dealing with before making a firm recommendation.

The bore is 4.195, I have a set of Speed Pro Moly rings that are 5/64 5/64 3/16. I can get what is needed.

Can you exchange those for a set with 1/16 top rings?

With the block being confirmed as accurate, a compression height of 1.525 and an 18cc D shaped dish will render a compression ratio of 10.075 which should work great with your 8601 cam and Indy heads. The 401 in my SC/Rumbler with steel nicely street ported heads and a Torker with an Eddie 800 AVS and same cam is an animal at a slightly lower compression ratio of around 9.6 due to having the stock 28cc valve relief center ridge style Speed Pro pistons with around .002 deck.
I doubt my steel heads flow as well as your Indy heads and suspect your engine will be even more of a powerhouse based upon first hand experience, The 401 stroke produces a tad more torque with all else equal compared to the 390 stroke but your better heads should more than compensate for the negligible difference in stock torque from the stroke difference. Should be a really fun and kickass engine when done. Edited by amx39068 - May/24/2012 at 12:44pm |

Yes, a -18cc reverse dome including the valve reliefs of 2.200 x .325 deep intake and 1.800 x .250 deep exhaust. Those reliefs are a bit deeper than you'll require with the current cam, but later? The valves start out further from the pistons on Indy heads than OEM. I would use 1/8 x 1/8 x 3/16 rings myself.

The Indy heads I have are 10 years old , I don't think They have changed the design. Are the thicker top rings just tougher or seal better?

Another item I found interesting, My old custom Wiseco's were 536 gms. compared to 516 for the newer Pro Tru. The old valve reliefs were noticeably smaller and the edges of the reliefs were not radiused like the new ones. The new Wiseco's really looked cool just sitting there, too bad they were useless to Me.
