Every now and then one needs to pull things out from under the dashboard. In this case to replace the damaged Speedometer cable that I carefull7 routed to close to the exhaust pipe.

Why is it that as time passes and you get more knowledgeable, better tools and are able to perform difficult jobs a little better that you forget you are also getting older and fatter and lying on your back under the steering column wedged between the gas, brake, front seat, partially open door and emergency brake hurts. when simply removing the seat would have made things a whole lot easier?

Ha!
When I began with cars, forty years and more ago, I was working outdoors. I changed engines in the street with most inadequate tools. As recently as six years ago I lay in the snow changing a starter motor. Now I have a double garage that I built myself, and if I need tools, which I rarely do as I have many, well I buy them.
But you do not mention the greatest difficulty, one that perhaps and by great fortune does not affect you, but which affects me and to judge by the response to a question on another forum concerning what people disliked about working on their cars was the most common problem of age, you do not mention that your eyesight for close working is not what it was, the problem of glasses, the losing and falling off of glasses, the wrongness of glasses for seeing whatever it is that one is trying to do.
I hope you are not so afflicted, because I find it a significant deterrent to doing things that once I used easily to do and makes me disinclined to start things which once would have been so easy.
Things like working behind the dash.

In my case it was too soon old and too late smart.

But! (there is always a but) by locating one of the plastic tools purchased to remove interior pieces with out damaging them, and wedging myself back into position (Please note still not smart enough to remove the seat) I was able to push the firewall rubber grommet out so I could remove the speedometer cable and measure it to verify the Kennedy American had one in stock. And I actually did not bleed all over something cosmetically important.
Next thing to do is verify my budget can take the hit to purchase and temporarily stash a wilewood brake kit. I'm supposed to be cleaning the garage out! I still haven't figured out how that works yet.

At 5'-9" and 320#, if I don't pull the seat out to work under the dash it's a potential 911 call!LOL

I had to get under the dash on a car at the track,  full cage, and the racing seat doesn't adjust, but at least the steering wheel removes easy.
5"11", about 200 lbs, 68 or so at the time.
Got under there eventually, head stuck up under the dash,  body in the floor, butt in the seat,  and feet around each side of the seat back.   I got it fixed, (wiring)  and then I couldn't get out.
Had to get help to get turned around and out.

Uncljohn made me crack up.

The first time I really got under my dash (69 American) I disconnected everything under there to remove my front wiring harness.  Just like Tom, I had feet in the air, doing my old high school wrestling moves with contorted positions I haven't been in for 40 years.  At 56 and in fairly decent condition I thought before I started that it would be a piece of cake.  Well, I have little space for my car so it sits in my cul-de-sac as my work area.  About 2 minutes into the dash work, I guarantee you I taught all the neighbor kids within shouting distance a lot of new choice words to share with their friends at school.  My wife thought I sounded like Darren McGavin (the dad in the movie "The Christmas Story) with a bleep after every other word.

After recapturing the use of my body after three days, I swore never again.  Hence this picture as I get to start on the new wiring soon.

I should think the seat would be quite relieved as well!
