I would say just plonk the 401 in front of the 904. I'm sure it will survive at least in the short term if you don't beat on it. When the time comes you can swap the tranny out.

I don't think I have that much self control, to just baby it all the time in fear of busting the trans. I would rather try to save the 304 and know that if I mash the gas to pass a car or merge on a freeway or some other reason (lol) that it wont blow up... it might be a year or so before I can get around to the trans upgrade. Getting the car running will also help me work out all the kinks in preparation for the bigger 401.
