Ok. With better lighting. From behind in neutral. Next from the front side in neutral. You can see the 1-2 od position. When it moves back it catches the reverse lever and takes it with it. Rod also hits the shifter frame at the top when 1st is engaged.

Are the threads bottomed on the reverse rod?
The 1-2 if hitting at top is too long on the rod adjustment. You can see even in neutral the 1-2 is close to where the reverse rod curves outward at the shifter end. And it looks like the 1-2 rod is too close to the reverse shifter arm( the long arm that the reverse rod fits into at the bottom of the shifter control box) and maybe the 1-2 rod itself is catching the reverse armand pulling on it thatway. In any case you need to center, and/or shorten the 1-2 rod first. Steve

Aha. Steve. I believe you may have the answer! Shorten the reverse rod! Eureka!
Thanks. I will give it a try and let you know. Steveo

Try that first, though I meant to shorten the 1-2 rod, unless I didn't quite get which rod is hitting at top when first is engaged.

You're 1-2 lever in the side cover looks a little off. That is the adjustment for it. The pawl may be worn and or you can check the sleeve.
Did you play with the reverse rod? One other slight adjustment are the sleeve washers on the shifter end. They look a little tired. Steve |

If the codes follow dates the example you gave would be 10/69, which is more the likely given the strike and the backlog that would tend to generate after. The jury is still out on what plating was done at the time. Steve

It's been a long time, but I think the levers on the outside of the T-10 sidecover are two piece and you can adjust length of the rod by loosening the two nuts, which may address why one of your arms is at a higher angle than the other. The reverse rod looks to be in the ballpark in length from the pics but if you played with the adjustment(if you need to) you could adjust the angle and that might also help clear the 1-2 rod.

After adjusting the reverse rod (not very much) checking all detents (ok) I come to the conclusion that Steve you maybe correct in that I have to lengthen the 1-2 rod. As far a I can tell to lengthen, I will have to remove and flatten out some of the bend. I can then see it missing the shifter body when going into first. Another thing that I've also discovered is I'm not getting enough throw going into second to get it to engage fully without really slamming it there. Again lengthening the 1-2 rod should correct this. Now the question is, how did it wind up this way? Before I start bending things up, I have to be damn sure it isn't something that I created to start with. I bought the car in a not running condition. I do know that it shifted very hard in any gear while sitting it and dreaming about driving it. L.O.L. After finding about 5# of hard grease in the shifter I can understand why. I will keep looking and playing. Patience, grasshopper......
Thanks for the help and pictures. I'm still open for suggestions.

The one two lever is the adjustment point. It is two pieces and if you loosen the hold down nut and the bolt at the end the two pivot to adjust length. One of the pieces is slotted at the end.
