Hi all
I have 14x7" (edit: 14x6) "Magnum 500" style steel rally wheels from a '70 AMX on my Hornet.
I wanted to get tires that fill out the flares nicely so I got P225/70R14
They look perfect in the back but in the front they rub a little on the front "corner" of the wheel well at the the bottom when turning at just the right angle.

Does anyone know the biggest size that will fit in the front?
I want the biggest size that will never rub - and/or something that will compliment the 225/70R14 in back
Sizes
P225/70R14 26.4" (current size - a little too big)
P225/60R14 24.6"
P215/70R14 25.9"
P215/65R14 25"

I'm reading that stock tires on a sportabout were 25.1"

i had 215/65-14's on the front of my 63 Classic. those *rarely* scraped, and only when turning into a driveway with that wheel compressed on the up-ramp. all it did was polish the steel a bit. the hornet isn't all that different...

oh and changing alignment makes a huge difference! i forget which affects which...

I took off a half coil from the front springs but it hasn't had an alignment yet so it hasn't gone down all the way. I think when the caster is adjusted via the eccentric bolt on the lower control arm, it will sit "centered" on the arch of the fender flare - or at least that was the idea. I had also replaced the flat shocks with new ones so maybe that's pushing back and I need to take off another half coil to have it sit that way.
Safest thing seems like 215/65-14 since its stock diameter

The largest size I could get under my 73 is 205/50/ZR17. Anything more and it would rub.

I don't have a tire answer but I think the magnums on the 70 AMX would have been a 14x6

You do not want to run the 215/65R14 on the front with the 225/70 on the rear.  The 65 series tire is a wider profile that the 70 series tire and will create a handling problem. Running a narrower profile on the rear will create oversteer, or the backend will feel wishy-washy especially when cornering. Better option would be either a 205/70 or 215/70.  The 205's are 25.3 and the 215's are 25.9.  If your 225's are only rubbing slightly either of those sizes should give you the clearance you need.

Pitcrew that's a 25.1" tire, same as stock
The 73 has different fenders as you know. The fender flare arch is a little smaller?
Rogue343 I'd like to use the 215/70 if that will fit at 25.9"
My Ford Ranger has 215/70 and the same bolt spacing!
I could try putting those on but if the backspacing is different it won't be an accurate test
amxdreamer you're probably right

Buy smaller tires or put new springs in.
