As already suggested, that could have been done by a very careful use of a die grinder, cut-off wheel, drill and flat file, round file. Take your choice.
Some people are a lot better with hand tools than others.

Definitely non-factory especially with the hood blister.

The hood has a scoop on it not a blister. "This hood is on a 1969 Factory SS #6 George Warren race car. The original hood was really beat up so I found a perfect one to replace it. This is the hood in question with slotted louvers. My car will soon be RWB. These 52 cars are great glimpses of drag racing history. My #6 car even beat the Sox & Martin Hemi Charger in match racing. Ran10.73 when the NHRA record that year was 10.71. So a real neat car." Buddy Belzer

So the one with the cut louvers.. Is it the original to the car or the one you found for the replacement?

Buddy Belzer is the owner of the above #6 George Warren '69 SS AMX. Buddy emailed the above pictures and text and asked me to post them. I quoted his email verbatim. Buddy hopefully will chime in. His email above states the current hood is not the hood that came with #6 George Warren SS AMX.

Interesting ! I thought about doing the same to my 1969 AMX , just for the look mind you. The hood budges were copied from a WW II P-40 fighter plane. Dick Teaque was an air craft designer before he was an automotive designer . Dick did the P-61 night fighter design , that used late in WW II. LRDaum

Fascinating. So the early AMX hood and possibly 1970 Javelin hood scoop were inspired by WWII American fighter aircraft.

There's evidently a lot of leeway given when you say something is "inspired by".
I see no resemblance between the power bulges on the early AMX hood and any bulge or scoop on either the P-40 or P-61. Just like Bill Mitchell said the early 50's Cadillac tail fins were inspired by the P-38's twin rudders. I can see no resemblance other than there's 2 of each, on both the Cadillac and the P-38.

I owned a 1970 Roadrunner with the air grabber hood and pistol grip 4-spd. I saw a resemblance with the functional air grabber hood and WWII P40 air craft.

That bulge us the radiator to the Curtis P-40 War Hawk. The tiger shark front was used on just about everything through the years... maybe the P-40 borrowed it from a cartoon image of a bomb, something or another.
I always liked the Spitfire, P-51 Mustang variants, Flying Fortress, and P-40. Edited by 304-dude - Nov/22/2016 at 6:43pm |
