A small spring broke off from the heater control valve some time ago when I was taking it off and I'm not sure where it goes, any help? Finally got another one to replace it. 63 Rambler Classic

Let's see if I can describe this properly. You see the stub on the moveable lever that the end of the Bowden cable is attached to ?
OK, adjacent to that stub is a second stub bent down at a 90 degree angle with a "V" notch in it. One end of the spring hooks into that "V" notch. The other end of the spring goes into that little wide rectangular slot on the base plate that's next to the copper coil and the open hook end of the spring sticks up through the opening right next to the copper tube. From the looks of things it seems that you want to hook the spring into the base plate first and then hook it into the V on the moveable lever. Edited by george w - Jul/23/2018 at 8:04pm |

It looks like your replacement spring is heavier than the original. This may or may not be a potential problem. Also note that the end loops on your replacement spring are both oriented in the same direction, on the original they're opposite each other. This probably doesn't matter.

Seems to work well other than the lever for the heat in the car stopping half way up, it doesn't get to high. The mechanism on the heater control valve has full movement though and moves all the way down and back up when operating the lever on the dash, so I'm not sure why that could be happening.

You need to adjust the cable position, probably at both ends. If you're lucky you'll only need to adjust the end at the valve. Move the temp control inside to all the way off which is the minimum setting. Then release the little black retaining clip that holds the outer cable sheath and move the lever on the water valve to it's minimum position. Latch the clip down to hold the sheath in this position. If you can't do it then go inside the car and release the retainer on the inside and reset the cable position. What you want to achieve is that the control knob inside is all the way at the full off position at the same time the water valve lever is also at the full off position.
What you'll find is that the control lever inside may stop a bit short when it's at full heat. No bid deal. What's important is that it goes to full off. |
