There is all kinds of info out there on the V8 cylinder heads and casting numbers, but not much on the sixes.
So let's get a list going. Specifically I need to know the casting numbers for 1976-1978 232's. I have a 1977 that I'm trying to find a stock replacement head for. |

Look up" Jeep Block casting numbers "on your search engine. I used dogpile.com as a search engine.
I got an older list off a jeep web site which where you want to look. The jeep guys did a very good job tracking down all the casting numbers for the majority of the sixes. The 232 head casting number I have on my list is from 1975 to 1979 is : 3227258 . Hope that helps. LRDaum PS It was generally under Jeep CJ Numbers and the list I have was off a geocities web site. Not sure it exists any more. LRD |

I did a lot of searching but kept coming up with different numbers.
Some places say 3217258 and others say 3217259. I don't suppose there is much difference. |

The TSMs say the 232 and 258 use the same head for a given year. At least the 1976 TSM does. Whats wrong with your head?

All six spark plug holes are heli-coiled, and the threads only contact about half the spark plug. I'm concerned about heat conduction from the plug to the head along with future risk to stripping out.
When I made this thread I thought I was stuck with heli-coils, but I have found out they make full thread insert sleeves that would solve all my reliability and heat conduction concerns, so it all depends on what a machine show would charge to install the sleeves. It also just occurred to me that while my car is a 1977, the block and head might actually be 1976. My Jeep was that way from the factory: 1972 Jeep, late 1971 motor. So I suppose I should take a look at my current casting numbers before I start looking too much and asking this stuff. Pardon me for putting the cart before the horse. Still, it's good info to have. If you can get that service done for a reasonable price, then go for it. I would still get a reman head for it if possible.
Your head sounds like a good candidate for a core charge. I personally keep my old heads for potential performance rebuilds in the furture (IE porting, larger valve sizes etc). But I've never had all the plugs stripped out like you have. Whatever you choose to do, I wish luck! |

My experience with reman cylinder heads is not a pleasant one. I had a reman 4.0L head that I'd rather not remember.

My 72 Gremlin was built in nov 1971, the original 304 was built around that time, (Id have to look at the valve cover tag) so the date makes my car an early 1972, which I think also applies to your Waggoneer I also have a 1976 Gremlin that has a sept 1975 production date.....a VERY early 1976.

Ok, here we go. Fasten your seatbelts.
My Jeep's door tag is April, 1972. Engine tag is March 15, 1972. Block casting is late 1971. Head castings are 2312993, so late 1971. Hey, look what I found: http://www.purpleized.com/AMX/head.shtml Nothing for 1976, though. |
