304-dude...

You can not replace the plastic dome as the Hornet is poured in place and encased within the clear plastic

Well, I would think heating up the metal would allow the separation of the plastic. Though it probably would ruin the plastic completely, but it should not be a problem as long as you have a proper mold to shape a replacement lense from new material.

If doing something like that for the first time. The only problem I forsee with attempting, is you don't want to try with anything better than being unusable.

Making molds, and casting small stuff isn't that hard. The materials call all be purchased at local craft stores, EZ Pour works great. Just watch a few YouTube videos of people doing it first.

Well I definitely want to thank all of you for your ideas and help. I have purchased a very nice used Hornet medallion for the hood. I will try to fix the emblem a already tried to fix but made worse. I was trying to see if any other Hornet parts would work.

So I looked at the Hornet gas cap. It looks similar the Hornet is smaller. The outer diameter looks the same..

It's pretty close but not a perfect match. I actually think the Hornet on the gas cap looks better.

So I looked at a Hornet horn bezel. It's a real close match. But when you look at the back it looks different. Has a lot more plastic around the edges.

As far as just pouring a new dome or another goes, please see above picture to see how the emblem is made. I wish it was just as easy as poring new plastic over a metal emblem. But as the picture shows, the Hornet is hollowed out, black played out where needed first, then proper chrome colors painted, then the proper area is chrome painted, then the rest is painted black. All on the underside of the emblem. Paint is stacked like screen printing, r/c car are painted same way. Grom the indide out. Im not that good at painting. I fully understand the c oncept. For me, marking a mold and repoping them is them is the easy part.

The thoughts that it was just plastic poured over a metal emblem did make me think of a bunch of different ideas for a Hornet hood emblem.

Just figuring out this pictures thingy

He's the horn button medalion compared to the hood emblem medalion.

This pictue shows the Hornet medallion mounted in the horn bezel.

This one shows the back of the medallion. Do you can see. The back of the horn emblem is the same. Might be worth tryingvto make a new 1, or 2, or more.

Again, there is no plastic lens, the Hornet is encased within the clear plastic, it is all one piece. Also, no parts are metal, everything is plastic.

The one piece Hornet is set into the plastic "chromed" mounting, water gets under the Hornet, ruins the black finish and the clear plastic gets ruined. See pics above of an original emblem, then the original popped out of the chrome mounting and a modified Hornet emblem cut out of the center of an original Hornet gas cap set into place.

You can also pick up one of the finger nail polishing/buffing sticks from the nails section at a pharmacy or etc, they usually have three or four "grits" all on one stick. Start with the coarsest grit to smooth it all out and work in order back to the finest polishing grit, it wont fix the cracks but the clear acylic will come back smooth and shiny- I use them on the windows etc for plastic models when I am restoring one- as an FYI, you may need to start with an emory cloth first depending how deep the "burns" from the Dremel are into the plastic, goal is to get it completely smooth by each grit. Once its buffed out, follow that up with some novus or maguires polish .

That's a good idea. I'll try that. How deep are the burns? Its so bad that the rubbing compound is now encased in the plastic. There other emblems available but I'd still like to give it a shot.

Thanks for the clarification that other emblems could be used and modified to fit for the hood emblem. We are on the same page with ideas. Do what works. I wouldn't go ruining a good/great condition gas cap but I've seen some pitted up caps for sale cheap that still had a good hornet emblem. Same as with steering wheel bezels. I like black interior and I have several other colored steering bezels with the Hornet emblem. Most are to good to pull apart just for the emblem tho.
