Recently at a junkyard that I went to to get some Hornet parts from a Sportabout I noticed that the hood still had the Hornet emblem. It was cracked and hazzy but there it was as a whole. I figured i can live with the small cracks but i wanted to get rid of the haze. The only thing i have is a dremmel with some of the buffing bits. Even while using the buffing compound, I still managed to "burn" it. Now what? I figure since no one re-pops them and I'm not spending over $200 on eBay, that I'd figure out how to spruce this one up. Thank you.

!!!! WOW !!!! Ive been on here for almost 4 years and finally figured out how to put a picture on here. It's about time.
Anyway. This is what the emblem looks like after I tried to fix it. It was only jazzy before |

I had a hazy American hood emblem. I used 1500 grit sandpaper and water and slowly wet sanded it by hand. Anything with speed with burn it. It is not perfect, but it looks far superior to what it did before.

Don't know how deep the haze is, hopefully it is not like the 71 to 74 Javelin instrument panel lens.
I use mothers mag polish and rub away with a cloth. Takes a bit of elbow grease and cleans up clear plastics well. When you think nothing can be done to make it is worse, make a mold of the dome area, and look around for clear plastic button kits. They are not so domed but you can heat up the plastic and allow it is to form and reshape to the mold. Once you make one of proper shape, try to remove the old plastic and replace with your custom lens. |

Well I scratched it up and made it worse. Like stated by 6768rogues, from the excessive heat from the tiny buffing wheel/cone. My dremel only has 2 speeds, off or full steam ahead. I was hoping that it would buff out like the letter opener that I made in 8th grade shop class. Guess it's not all easy like 8th grade. Dern it. I think it's hazed all the way through. So now I just need to smooth it out to make it look as good as this one can look. Sand away I guess. Thanks for the tips. I'll give it a shot.
If I thought that I could redo the blue, red and chrome chrome as good as original, I'd make a mold for it and repop them. |

I've had this Hornet emblem laying around on my junkpile for years, it's from a '75
Sportabout that had to be scrapped due to bad rust. Originally bought it
as NOS for a few bucks at a show about 25 years ago. It's weathered a
bit, with some discoloration in the black background. The chrome surround
is in better shape than it looks in the photo, the white on the lower
right is from reflected light rather than wear. If interested drop me a
PM. The backside is kind of nasty but that doesn't show when installed on the car.

Once you've wet sanded it all you can, clear it! Does wonders for worn clear plastic.
