Here's a video of what's going on.   It's surging and idling weird.  Give it gas and go down to idle it wants to die.

What's been done recently...

New remanufactured motorcraft 2bbl carb from autoline
New lifters installed
New intake gasket
2 new rocker arms
Had someone mess with the gas tank a little
New exhaust
New fuel pump as of yesterday
New vacuum advance as of yesterday

We took the carb apart and cleaned it today, without taking jets and all that off.
We replaced the power valve thinking it may be that...No dice.

Could it be a bad leak on the new intake gasket?

Compression test came out ok across the board..

Your car sounds great! What exhaust are you using?

Concerning the problem, have you changed the PCV? A bad one will make a car idle low and die.

Did it surge like that before you replaced the vacuum advance? I'd try disconnecting it to see if it's the issue.

I assume you set the idle mixture and all that (had to ask....)

Snotty, thanks =)  duals with X pipe and Flowmaster 40's with chevelle stainless tips.  Local shop made it all and installed.

I haven't messed with the PVC yet to be honest.  I'll have to check it out and see.  Thanks

Greyhounds, yes it was acting the exact same before hand.  Also yeah we've adjusted them several times with no resolution.  Thanks for the suggestions.

Check your air bleeds on top make sure nothing is in them , whats your timing at , check for a vacuum leak, have you put a vacuum gauge on it .

Remanufactured carburetors hardly ever run right.

Autoline is pretty good, though. I have an Autoline remanufactured YF on my 232, and they did a good job rebuilding it, but it's not the right carb. The problem is they take in carburetors from a range of several different years, say 1970-1974, and resell them as fitting any car in those years. In reality, there were 10 different specific calibrations of that carburetor in those years for different applications.

Basically if you have a 1974 car, they can sell you a 1970 carburetor that is calibrated wrong for your engine. They usually run ok, but not perfect.

-----------------------

Definitely behaves like a vacuum leak, but it would have to be a MASSIVE vacuum leak.

Could also be the vacuum advance dithering in and out. If you have manifiold vacuum going to the vacuum advance and it isn't enough vacuum to fully advance the unit, it'll dither in and out and fluctuate the timing, causing an uneven idle. That's not a problem if you run ported vacuum advance, which these did from the factory.

If it's got points check the dwell esprsciLly if you just changed cam make sure dist shaft not wobbling when motor turning   Or dist shaft bushing worn out if hei could still be troubles    TTY to richer it up artificially by resting a towel or shop rag over carb at idle. If smooths out something baking it lean. Of it's got egr it could be bad as we'll

Pull off the rotor to make sure BOTH springs are on the mechanical advance. If one let go, it could be trying to advance at idle.

Thanks for all the info, we've tried almost every suggestion and still a no go.

I have a question, does anyone have a known good carb lying around for a 304 72 javelin?  Just so I can test and rule my carb out.

Would be greatly appreciated.
