Great. I need to check out what's in the car, it's not where I live, and then I'll be back here with more questions. Thanks Billd and Pdok for the pics!

I had thought about doing this swap. I found a detailed "how-to" online.  Follow this link to it:

http://www.4x4wire.com/jeep/tech/electrical/hei02/

It has just been too hot to be stomping through the yards so I went with a rebuilt points distributor from Advance Auto from a 1974 258. That is working fine so far (I just put it in about and hour ago).

You could just buy a skipwhite HEI on ebay. Last one cost me $59.95 shipped to my door. I hook mine to the starter relay on fender about a foot away.

hi, what , if any, is the difference between the DUI hei, and the cheaper ones. for years we have been warned about the "knockoff" hei conversions. does this no longer apply? I bought a DUI for my 258 in 2000, and it ran great for over 15 years, and is still ok. Last year I bought a $99. "knockoff" from 4wd hardware, and it runs ok, but vac advance has to be blocked off due to the adjustment being so far out of spec. (different car), not happy with it at all. There has to be some benefit to spending about $350. for a DUI, vs $50. or so for an offshore knockoff. Are the Skip Whites of comparable quality to the DUI? thanks, gz

Skipwhite has adjustable vac. advance. Works great on my AMC 6's. I held a GM one next to it and it looks like the GM parts will bolt up too. I don't daily drive mine, but they have lasted 3-4 years.

Well, you hit the problem -- the knock-off companies may not do enough research to figure out what the adjustments are for each different engine. Sell it and let the customer figure the details out -- sort of like Microsoft does with Windows. After enough complaints they will go back and fix the problems and change part numbers. No complaints (or not enough) and, not enough sales, and it will go away (the AMC part, not Microsoft...).

If there are adjustable parts like the vac advance the HEI might not be adjusted to work well with an AMC engine. But they found out it physically fit, so that means a few more sales...  some user adjustment may be required. Seems like 4WD Hardware would have got someone to test it first, but big retailers often aren't very responsive, as long as it's selling. That's one reason getting something from BullTear is a good idea -- they do check things out before selling.
