Car has been sitting for a while w elec issues.  It is a 401 w Go Pak gauges.  Got everything working (fuel, temp, oil press, tach)...but they will work intermittently then go to zero or max out (the tach just goes to 0).  Sounds like a ground issue to me but I was careful to make sure the ground wire in the gauge plug was good (and tach is a separate ground)...and the dash gauge lights are working.

Next issue...the 74 year only rheostat dimmer switch for the panel was broken so it was replaced w one of the earlier year switches.  Seemed simple enough as the connector just plugged into it.  Now I notice that w the headlight sw off and the panel light sw off the lights for the lower dash are on (even w ign sw in off posn).  When the hl sw is on, the gauge lights are on, but dim.  If the panel light sw is set to dome (w hl sw on), the dome light is on and the gauge lights are bright!

For the gauges, it could be the IVR, you will need to pull the clister to test. While your at it, make sure the noise supressor is seated well on the pins. And check every pin for any loosness. None should wiggle.

Clean with pencil eraser being gentle not to cause bending or stress to the pins.

As for lights being on when switches are off. Disconnect head light switch and remove for ohming the connections. You may have a shorted out internally switch.

He's right. The pins in that connector are a PITA. I have the same issue and when I get the car back out, I'm fixing that problem once and for all while I'm swapping out my tach.

I disagree. If it was just the temp and fuel gauges acting up then, yes, look at the IVR. In this case all the gauges have a problem. Do the Go Pak gauges use an IVR? Regardless, my comment stands. It sounds to me like intermittent power or ground connections to the gauge cluster.

Are you sure the replacement switch has the same connector pinout as the 74 style? It could be different, which would explain the problems you are seeing.
