Carter YF leaking fuel

Another thing you might want to check is the fuel filter; if it's defective, it'll pass tiny bits of particulate matter into the carb, hold the float needle open and make it seem like the float setting is wrong -showing the same symptom; fuel spilling over top of carb (out the float bowl vents)
 
I would advise to find another mechanic because they did not immediately want to double check the carb.
 
Reason why is fuel spilling out carb is a definite safety hazard that could start an engine fire.
 
Consider contacting your nearest local AMC club to find an excellent mechanic who enjoys working on our favorite American Motors cars.
