I'm looking to buy a rebuilt Eaton PS pump for my AMX with the dual pulley. I notice that the single pulley pumps are about 1/2 the price of the dual-pulley. I'm wondering if it's possible to just use my original dual pulley, or are the shafts of the pumps different between the single and dual pulley versions??
TIA! |

Shafts are indeed different. Everything else-besides the pulley-is the same.

Yes, the shafts are different as said. these are easy to rebuild with common hand tools. They always leak at the bowl seals because of the crappy design of only one fastener and a stamped bowl (no machined bottom). There was a discussion a few months ago with some assembly tips that I posted in.
The basic design of this pump was used for decades after AMC by different manufacturers, at least into the 90s- it's a good design. The only difference was a remote reservoir and a machined plate that bolted to the top for fluid supply that eliminated the usual leak area. |

BTW, Cardone makes new pumps to replace the single-pulley Eaton. I bought one hoping I could take the guts out of it to replace parts in my Eaton, but they're different internally. Looks the same on the outside but it's a vane type pump rather than roller. Might be a good option for someone needing a single-pulley replacement. Around $100 at Rock Auto isn't bad for a new pump, though I do question the longevity of the Chinese casting over time as there is no removable liner like the cam housing that the original rollers rode in. Perhaps it's not important with a vane-style pump?
I ended up fixing my Eaton just by taking it apart, cleaning it and putting it back together. Must have just had a blockage somewhere. Edited by CamJam - Feb/26/2019 at 9:51am |
