Phoenix Graphics may have a reverse template they'll sell you, but for the money, just buy the stripes. I've used them for c-stripes on my '69 Javelin and over-the-top stripes for my '68 AMX.

Also in both cases, I hired a local stripe specialist to install them. Last month, he said installing the double roof stripes on my '68 AMX was one of the hardest things he's done. Why? because there's not much to measure from to make certain they're perfectly centered and straight. Even my brother, a body and paint professional, does not attempt to install stripes.

You are quite right.  I did a little experimenting on a junk car door and I do see that painting stripes will be extremely difficult, especially with my lack of expertise in paint and body work.

In a week or two, I'll start talking to a couple specialized paint shops around here and see if they are interested in doing the stripe kit installation.  I do also know a guy that does the full-body graphics lamination stuff, he may be a good resource or the person to do it.

That has definitely crossed my mind!  I have been using a black rust converter/primer and have considered running a layer of that over the car with a clear coat.  If I don't like it, some sanding and go over it with a different color.

Pros:
- Flat black is much more visually forgiving with sheet metal and paint imperfections
- Painting a rust converter over the whole car may be helpful in the long run
- Black/red is an okay looking color scheme

Con:
- I don't know how much time painting will take.  Prepping, masking, and painting multiple times may be out of my financial and time budget

Differently food for thought....

Yes, it will impact the re-sale value to some extent, but now is the time to decide the direction of the project. If you're not going concours, then don't worry about it. The biggest thing you can do to retain value is to keep all the original parts, even if you're not using them. A restorer will pay more for a modified car with all its original bits than without.

Hmmm... that is an interesting perspective.  Really, I haven't cared about resale value with this car, but now that you mention it, I have been keeping all the original parts that came off the car as I have been modifying it.  The original 304, BW auto trans, suspension parts, etc., are all stashed away.

All you guys have been helping me to realize that the car may have future value other than being the daily driver that I'm using it for now.  The realization that I may have been messing up a car with some good potential value has got me concerned, but your perspective is a sensible compromise in light of all that.

I should probably consider less evasive modifications in the future, i.e., do under-body subframe links rather than through-body, etc.

Thanks!

I did see a metallic orange AMX up close in Denver a few years ago, and I thought it was amazing.  I'd be afraid if going a color like that though on a daily driver, I have a metallic semi-dark green '69 Javelin, and it is really hard to keep it looking good, any dirt and it stands out.  I'm not the best at paint and body work in general, pulling off a good looking bright or metallic orange.... I should stick to a darker color.  LOL

I laughed at this for a while, well said.

You're lucky that you have a car that was red from the factory - a lot of people would like to have that car in red.

I say keep it red.
