Not really a critical topic, but I was wondering if anyone knew why AMC attached the manual transmission crossmember using one bolt and one stud on each side?

Even with PB Blaster and some heat, the nuts were so rusted that the whole studs came out--I was lucky they didn't break off.   I chose to just put Grade 8's in all holes.

But I would be curious to know why the studs in the first place?

Thanks.

my 63 classic, and 61 American, same thing!

I assume it's some religious ritual.

seriously it's hard to believe it has any bearing on fastener performance. maybe having one stud in place made the assembly line go faster.

Yeah, I thought it might be for that reason--since there were multiple holes in the frame for different cross member locations, I thought maybe they put studs in early on the line based on whatever the vehicle configuration was.  When it got to the tranny operation, they knew what holes to use.

Or, it could be the religious thing!

I've often wondered the reason for this too. AMXrated's explanation makes sense to me.

as said, it's to make assembly easier/quicker. The transmission and crossmember were already attached to the engine assy at the body drop- it all went in at one time.
