Fiber washers will do in a pinch. They are usually at most hardware stores.

I suggest that you spend the time, a couple hours maybe, and read and figure out how a points ignition works, from "first principles". all points cars are all the same, for 75 years, with only minor variations. once you figure out how they work they're easy to work on. sorry if that sounds condescending, I don't mean to be rude, but electricity seems to be one of those things that scares people away... it can *be* complex, but points ignitions are not. "+" goes to 12V switched battery power. some cars put a ballast resistor in series with the + lead. the "-" side goes to the points. the points are just a switch opened and closed by the distributor cam. the body of the points is ground, via the body of the distributor. the little spring that runs to the plastic isolated stud with nut, is the "high side" of the switch. that goes to coil "-". that point is open/grounded/open/grounded/... as the distributor turns. you can simply see the point open and close. the gap should be .016 or so. if you put a test lamp or voltmeter connected to the points wire/nut, and the other lead to ground, the light should go on and off as the points open and close.... |
