Good point westernred, I do believe the heater fitting on the pump sucks from the heater core, by low pressure siphon. The center creates low pressure for flow to be sucked up behind the body of the pump to flow pressurised to the ports on the housing. Because the fittings for bypass and heater are on the outer low pressure side of the pump, the flow will mix with incoming coolant being pumped by the impeller.

304-dude, You are 100% correct. The return hose from the heater core is ported into the suction side of the coolant pump. The reason being is that will offer warmest coolant earlier passing through the heater core as the engine warms up. Only us northerners know why.... The coolant passing through the heater core is not regulated by the thermostat. I wouldn't route rear intake manifold coolant lines through this pump port connection. Hurst 390 has done it correctly, the engine he has done this with should warm up very evenly and have similar temperatures at all four corners of the intake manifold. It's all simple science and common sense.

Beat me to it, Indy heads are NOT solid. They are bigger to allow for the raised runners. The bypass idea should not hurt and may help in a supercharged or duration motor for cooling #7 and 8 chamber and cylinder. I am reasonably sure some coolant flow restriction will be needed.

Flow through the heater passage is restricted by the port size - like running a restrictor plate instead of a thermostat. Mine has been connected from a port added to to driver's side to a tee to passenger's side through the heater core and back to the pump for 10 years (well, heater core is currently bypassed as had a leak and haven't gotten around to fixing it). On the old Forum this was discussed and recommended as a better method, but I don't have any testing to prove what is best. Edit: Also, I don't have a water valve at the heater passage, so it's set up as constant flow (A/C was removed years ago). However, I do know that the stock arrangement works fine for most - especially if wanting to run the stock heater and A/C. Hope this helps,RD Edited by Red Devil - Nov/18/2018 at 10:52am |

The more I look at that picture of porting under the thermostat housing... I wonder if the adapter also has provisions for the thermostat to fit above so proper function is not bypassed by the rear flow into the neck.
Another thing not relating to the topic... I understand the reason for sideways mounting the carb, but there is more going on than cooling, thermal spacer and a big billet carb adapter, on just a wee torker. Hehehehehe! Look at all the possibilities not to dump a torker just yet. Clean and simple enough for just about any need, or change, as pictured. |
