'69-76 can use the same. At some point AMC offered a shorter filter, but I'm not aware of any fitment issue in those years, and I would use the longer filter for a little more oil capacity. |

As far as I know, all years for the AMC six share the same oil filter as the AMC V8 for that same year. The original filter was very large and the modern replacements are almost all about an inch shorter in length. The Purolator L30005 is still the original size but the Napa Gold 1258 is smaller. It is becoming a harder to find filter. There is another yet smaller filter for use on engines with limited clearance. Many AMC sixes must use this filter to clear the motor mount. The Napa Gold number is 1522. This filter is totally interchangeable with the larger filter aside from the can being smaller in diameter. There is less filter media of course but that is not a problem in normal use. This smaller filter is more available because it is shared with many more modern vehicles. It is always in stock and many fancy versions of it are made. Napa offers their Platinum version of this filter and Purolator offers their One version. Both are $13 filters designed for extended drain intervals on synthetic oil. While this is cool, it is mostly a waste of money on an old engine. |

I don't know if Wix (Napa gold) has ever fixed their defective anti-drain back valve but I have had three out of three that the ADV did not work and the 232 would rattle on start up. I have heard the rattle on other people's AMC's on start up as well. Never had that problem with the Purolator L30005 or the Delco PF24.

I am a NAPA sales associate. I am aware of the defective anti-drainback valves on the 1258 filters, having bought and experienced it myself on my own cars. I have disassembled the filters and know what causes the problem. I will check the 1258 filters currently in stock at the store I am employed and file a report to Wix filters if I find they still have faulty anti-drainback valves. Otherwise every Napa filter manufactured by Wix that I have sold has appeared to be an excellent filter that functions without issue.

Would I have any expected drainback issues on my 4.7L? Standard 4.0L block that bolts straight in like the 258 but screws in with the long pipe typically found on the 90 degree adapter fitting. I'm using a Microgard MGL51626 filter. It looks like I could go with the AMSOIL EAO42 or Purolator PL14459 if there are issues here but my opening goal was to make this thing 100% solid. I'm starting to think I may have achieved that less than halfway through the build. Any time I have to go back and change anything critical, it's a chore like it was with the original 258 loadout.

The AMSOIL EaO filters are made by Wix. They are identical to NAPA Platinum, which are available for some cars. 4.0L's use a different filter. They use what I call the "Chrysler filter". It is a NAPA Gold #1085.

I was going to mention that the 4.0L uses a different filter. It has different threads. BUT... you can change the threaded nipple in the filter adapter (angled from block) and use an early model filter. The nipple screws out of the earlier 232/258 block or adapter (I think Eagles used an angled adapter?). I did that and use a large filter on my 4.0L block.
