I know this is probably a silly question but will the 258 bolt directly in place of my 1969 232

yes it will/ transmissions may be different.
What year 258 are you talking about? Is the 232 a 69? No such thing as a silly question. Having AMC Fun, Ollie

Unless you have the one year only (1971) 258, your trans will not bolt up to it. But, that just means better trans options 😄

1969 American with a 232 and I'm thinking about getting a crate 250 horse 258 to swap into it so I'm wanting to know if it is a direct swap as far as to the transmission and such

It is an automatic car. I've done a lot with the V8 stuff I have a 68 with a 390 in it but have never really done any six-cylinder stuff

If that crate 258 is a 72 or later engine, and it probably is, it won't bolt to the bellhousing you present engine has.

1971/1972 is the break year -- in 1972 the sixes and eights had the
same, new, bell housing pattern and different automatic and manual
transmissions. you can't swap parts across that boundary. if you get a 72 or newer six (or 8) you need to have a newer bellhousing+transmission (manual) or trans (auto). also
lots of trivia changed -- throttle linkages, wiring harness (starter on
drivers side pre-72, on passenger side 72 and up). Ford type solenoid
vs. integral. also if you want a manual trans and have an auto, you have to go find all the clutch gunk. its doable, but not that simple. |

AMC used the model 20 rear with V8 engines, many of which have lower HP that the 6 you are considering.

Horsepower isn't what kills axles. Torque is. Horsepower is just torque with speed.
