The 71 Hornet has a m 11 B...Original trans and I think that's what model the trans is...I have not done anything with the transmission in the years I have owned the Hornet...about 25 years...I had the radiator out and lost about 1 and a half to 2 quarts of fluid which I need to replace...I have no idea what was in the trans so what can I use to bring the level back to full and be safe with whatever was in it before....Thankyou   Bob in Alabama
Thankyou....Bob

69 TSM for a Borg Warner says Dexron ATF.  I would think that would be correct for 71 also.

I would say correct. I know some transmission guys say to run type F, but I would not. Because only Ford used Type F from the factory. Just about evryone else used Type A...which Dextron is the approved replacment.....

I just had my M11 rebuilt and the mechanic told me to use Dextron ATF after installing it in the vehicle.

To the best of my knowledge, none of the automatic transmissions that Nash / Rambler / AMC has ever used called for type F fluid.

Yes, agree original AMC said use Dextron in Borg Warner Automatics.
Long ago had my AMC 727 re-built and got a New B&M Converter.
B&M papers suggested their own Trick-Shift Auto Trans Fluid as first choice,
and Type-F as second best choice (something about friction modifiers, firmer shifts),
or original spec Dextron as B&M last choice, smoother softer shifts, but more slippage.
Agree though do NOT mix, but if empty, clean, and fresh, B&M likes Type-F better for "performance".
But if already has some fluid in it, it's not empty, then agree, Dextron is original spec.
