Those springs are a pain. I switched my American's to the pin type since the parts are dirt cheap.

mramc, I believe this is the tool you're describing? 



Works well most of the time, although I couldn't use it on the Rambler as it wouldn't catch on the return springs to remove them, nor catch on the pin to install them for some reason...had to resort to vise-grip pliers to remove them. 

For the Rambler hold down springs, I used a punch that was large enough to fit snugly into the spring. I had no problems installing all 4 springs!!!
