I have an opportunity to pick up S/C Rambler, but it has a broken rear axle. Looks like the axle has spun in the hub. From asking around, it appears to have a different rear than an AMX, Javelin, etc.   Sounds like V8 Americans are the only cars that share this part. Can anyone confirm this or have any ideas of another route or solution?

I would appreciate any advice you all may have.

Thanks!

I believe it is an AMC 20 for the smaller car (versus AMX, Javelin, etc.).  If it is an S/C Rambler, I would find another AMC 20 for the car.  They are not on every street corner, but available.  You could cut down a Ford 8.8 but I would not do it for the scarce S/C Rambler.  It would reduce the value as any I have seen on this Forum are usually striving for originality.

I don't think the broken rear axle should prevent you from getting the car if you want it.  Just a guess, but a small car AMC 20 can probably be picked up for between $500 - $1,000 depending upon condition.  I am fairly sure there is a difference between a '69 and older version versus a '70 and newer version.

There are others on the Forum that own these cars (anything from major projects to almost perfect).

I believe you are correct in that the American had a narrower rear end then the other models. Unfortunately new AMC 20 car axle hubs are no longer available.
Once a hub is installed, splines are cut into the hub that will only match that specific axle. It is a bad idea to mix an match used hubs and axle shafts. Mixing used hubs usually ends in another spun hub.

The easiest repair to your problem is to get aftermarket one piece axles. Doctor Diff, Moser, and Dutchman can all make aftermarket axles for your rear.

I would send the axle and hub out to a place that makes one piece units.
