Just bought a really nice 1974 Hornet sedan. Everything works except the gas gauge. What should I check first, then 2nd and so on?

Congrats on your Hornet! I've owned a '74 Hatchback X since 1977 and still like it!

1st, crawl under the car and disconnect the wire to the sending unit. Ground the wire to the body, and turn the ignition on and see if the gauge registers. If it does, the sending unit is at fault.
If it doesn't move the gauge, then it could be the sending unit OR the gauge...I'm inclined to think sending unit.

Does the Temperature gauge work? If not, then there could be an instrument voltage regulator problem, right in the dash itself.

Good luck and tell us what you find!

If a 74 Gremlin gas tank is the same as a Hornet's, I have a mint working sending unit. PM me your email and I'll send you pictures.

Yes.  The same procedure should work for your '63.  The sending unit is attached to the back of the gas tank.
