You can make a flange for the 258 and weld on 4.0L headers. The ports on a 258 are larger than the tubes on the 4.0L header though, that causes some turbulence in the port if just bolted on. Would be better to make a transition piece between the rectangular and round tubes sort of funnel shaped, or inserts in the ports (harder to do). Another difference is that the center ports on the 258 are siamesed together, the 4.0L separated. Even 258 headers have two separate tubes, merging the two center tubes won't be that hard.

I do have a factory tube exhaust manifold, new that I bought years back in thinking that I would do the 4.0 head swap, and of course it's still on the shelf ready to go to a good home to be used, I'll never do it. $75 + ship Blessings Richard

If you buy Clifford headers, be prepared to do additional welding on them.
They gave me a rough time. Having AMC Fun, Ollie |

I purchased a complete 258 package from Lying Larry Clifford. Headers, intake and carbs. The intake manifold did not have the final machining done on it. I had to cut all the mounting bolt holes myself. The carbs would not work with Lokar linkage that I needed for my 727 trans. I was told it would all work. I took one heck of a cut and returned the carbs. The exhaust headers were totally sub-standardly built. As if they were not even lined in the jig when built. I had to build up weld twice on the face surfaces and file by hand to get them to seal properly. The ports did not and still don't line up properly. Tell Lying Larry to keep his gasket, it will not work. Buy your own Rem-flex gasket, the only fighting chance you will have. I am trying to go easy on Lying Larry and his junk. I have had a few years to calm down. Do business with him at your own risk. You can bolt a plate over the hole, just make sure it's sealed good. I always recommend considering a 4.0L head swap if you want a header. You get a good valve cover and a factory header. You can use an aluminum 258 carb intake. You won't get much of a performance boost with just a head swap, but you do get a newer head and the better valve over and exhaust header. ANY 4.0L head, even the 87-90 Renix, is better than ANY 258 head. Ports are smaller on all the 4.0L head, but flow better due to being a better shape.
