Hello, new to the forum. I picked up a ‘76 Matador a couple years back. It was in rather good condition. Tuned it up and stuck a little money into getting it where I wanted it to be at the time. The transmission gave out for whatever reason, but the 5.9 still fires up and sounds healthy. I am back to a point where I can afford to fix it up, and reall want to do whatever’s nessicary to keep the original motor, but have a 5 speed manual. Im very novice in this stuff, and haven’t a clue what I need to look for or where to start in ordering parts. If anyone can help me out, give me some direction with specifics, it would be a tremendous help.

hi, you want a manual Matador?! there were very few made. Contact Modern Driveline, MDL, in Idaho. Anything is possible, however, it won't be easy or inexpensive. I just put one of their custom built WC T5s into a 77 Hornet, cost BEFORE installation, about $3200.Your present transmission is a Torqueflite 727, a VERY good transmission, IMO, just have it professionally rebuilt, and enjoy your car. Cost by a pro shop to pull/rebuild/reinstall. AND warranty, should be somewhere between $1000.-$2500, depending on where you are. Not trying to discourage you, but sticking a modern 5 speed into a Matador is not for a novice to this stuff.
another option is Silver Sport Transmissions, in Tennessee. shiftsst.com, excellent stuff, but be prepared to spend a cool 10G s, before your car is back on the road. Their BASIC Kit alone is between $4000.-$5000, prices go North from there. installation/troubleshooting/debugging, will be +$$ a lot. but hey, you got a MATADOR! love 'em, had two. both automatics btw. what body style is yours? good luck, gz

yeah, automatic to manual conversion is not a novice project. it's hard enough when you have all the parts to swap in from a manual car of the same make. fixing the auto trans will be far, far cheaper and faster to get an old car on the road reliably. it's got a torqueflite, they're common, very reliable and easy to find a rebuilder. that also isn't a novice project, but it can be done at home with a decent shop and tools. |

If you want to go ahead with this, there are several "AMC T5 swap" threads/sites. Here are a couple: As noted, the biggest issue will be the clutch pedal. If this is a sedan and not the Matador Coupe, you can find one easy enough -- any 67-78 Rebel/Matador clutch pedal should fit. For the Coupe I don't know. The Coupe has many unique parts. I would think you can modify a sedan/wagon clutch pedal to fit, but have no idea what you might need to do. Some cutting and welding probably involved... |

You don't go to a catalog and start ordering parts like you can Camaro where you can build the whole bloody car and get every last screw from a book or web site. There will be certain things you will need for sure, otherwise, most such things are take it as it comes and figure it on the go. Obviously the CORRECT flywheel for THAT engine size, the clutch parts, linkage may be an issue for a Matador, as maybe the pedals, etc. but AMC conversions are out of books, and you won't be ordering the parts, you'll be looking for them like placing want ads once you find which parts you are lacking for a specific car. Just calling 'em how I see 'em - no kits, just list parts and start looking or placing ads. About all you can order will be clutch parts. The rest you'll need to buy from people selling the parts used out of cars they have parted, etc.

Or if someone wants to be really old school "different" there's always the ol' Clutch-O-Matic option...
