Of all the fallacies that perpetually haunt AMC information (disinformation, misinformation & no information) this topic falls into the no information category.

'Leaves something to be desired' is how I used to feel before one day I was working on my Hornet and suddenly I realized; ...the strange looking dash is a schematic diagram of the car!

WOW!

The '70-'77 Grem/Hornet dash mimics the side profile of the '66 Cavalier showcar which was a design study of symmetry.

-Looking at the Cavalier from the driver side of the car, the dash shows where all the parts of the car are located inside ...it's all analogy; On the left side of the dash we have the headlights represented by the headlight switch, then the wipers, and under the hood we have the gauges representing the engine compartment. The center section represents the passenger cabin of the car with the air vents up top in the dash analogous to the windows, the 'weather eye' and the radio is the eyes and mouths of the people in the car! the cigar lighter is the gas pedal! & the ash tray represents the floor of the car! The right side of the dash; the glovebox, represents 'the boot', the trunk of the car.

The under-dash shelf A/C vents look like AMC sport styled wheels with white wall tires? ...and this represents brake cooling/air flow-turbulence around the open wheel wells?

The '54 Nash NKI prototype is Cavalier's older symmetrical design sibling. The AMC Metropolitan's dash shows some of the similar 'schematic diagram' analogies, but not as much as the Hornet/Cavalier dash.

Now you know.

Likewise, contrariwise, the '71-'74 Javelin dash and interior contains more non-symmetrical parts than any other car ever made? So by it's contrast, it's related to Cavalier prototype as well.

Now you know at least two ways AMC was a true automotive styling leader, not a styling follower as most non-AMC enthusiasts would like to believe.
