I've welded an additional piece of flat bar on mine to make sure they can't come apart, also limits movement so the rubber doesn't get over stretched:

Rich...
Here is a picture of my NOS Complete 1973 401 engine, with those mounts installed at the Kenosha Engine Assembly Plant. If you can see in the pic these are 1973 unique mounts with the studs NOT in the middle of the mount. |

I got a '73 Ambo Wagon 401 a few years after I got my '69 AMX and of course
the stock 401 and 727 got swapped into the AMX for awhile... then another motor or two... This was before the interweb, I was not aware nor did I notice the '73 Mount offset... and have no idea if I did or did not at one time or not mistakeingly use the offset mounts or if they may be in the car as it is right now....

Just wondering myself, as I removed my original 73 engine, to swap in a 75 engine. Was the 73 offset carried over into a few years run time? Never saw any issues as for noticeable clearance with fitting tranny to the mount, and head to firewall.

Offset mounts were only used in 1973 for 80 Series cars (Ambassador), there is a left and right, with different part numbers

Checking the parts books, Ambassadors used the same engine brackets 67-74, the same cross member 71-74, but used mounts with left and right part numbers only in 73. So the engine sat differently in the engine compartment 73 only? I also see Matador had L/R mounts in 1973. Dave Z |

the rearset mounts are very interesting,
I never heard of them before, why a 1 year only thing? I wonder if the negatives outweighed the positives so they changed it back(?). Would be interesting how the offset would effect things if used in other bodies (like the Javelin). Very curious.

I would guess if you needed some clearance at the tunnel, flipping left to right could shift the motor just a whisker forward if needed. Now there would be a wee scramble to obtain them 73 Ambo mounts for some trick tranny swaps. It's not a lot of offset, but 1/2" or so, just an odd a one one at that with it being a one year thing with the V8 mounts. |
