The notches should go to the front assuming that the pistons are installed on the rods correctly. Oil squirters on the the rods should shoot oil into the opposite cylinder. I'm assuming you oiled the the bores on assembly (I thin some people assemble them dry? The motor may be a little tight to turn by hand, but shouldn't be too tight, if you know what I mean. Other thing to check would be ring end gaps to make sure you have the right rings.

I think good practice would be to rotate the engine after each piston is installed, that way you will be able to tell immediately if there is a problem on one cylinder.
