Bought a 401 with a 727 transmission. If I’m going to a T-10 transmission will I need to machine the crank to accommodate the T-10 ? If I’m going from a 401 with a 4 speed T-10 to automatic will I need to machine the crank?? |

Yes you need a pilot bushing.
Nominally 0.754"ID x 1.057"OD x 0.875" deep. The OD, being period manufacturing, may need to be a little larger - so you have to measure to get the 0.0005 to 0.0010" press fit. The ID can be 0.0752" if the dowels were spot on. I know that this is not an off the shelf answer, but better safe then sorry. Parts of the day mixed with parts of today don't always mesh. |

In My Experience Re-balance it. All late AMC V8s are externally balanced
and will shake VIOLENTLY if the wrong flywheel is used. Did this on a 1970 390 with a supposedly correct flywheel. I was forced to re-balance it. Kinda sucks but it is a fact of life with AMC V8s. |

You will like your t10!
I have a 79 Spirit with a 304. Despite being 'inches challenged', it had an auto trans. It would barely chirp the tires off the line in factory trim. I got pedals out of a Hornet, bought a Lakewood bell housing, and installed a Doug Nash five speed in the car. ... It went straight to three gear rubber! JT |
