If running less than 10-psi of boost in a 401, would having the extra head bolts machined be necessary or possible in the edelbrock heads or not? Or would O-ringing the block be better?

At 10psi I would just use a stud with a cometic head gasket

There's a lot more to it than just a boost number. You can build a 401 that makes 350 hp on 10 psi or one that makes 1000 on 10 psi. Completely different animals and completely different requirements.

It was explained to me that the reason why AMC had head gasket issues is because the cast iron head is too weak ( water jackets, etc) along the bottom row to properly help seal, thus the need for a extra head bolt. My race motor is 13.5 to 1 Indy heads and cometic gaskets. NO issues with that set up for a couple of years. But the block needs to be decked because the cometic gaskets like a certain type/ clean head surface. I run ARP bolts.
My 2 cents for the day.

Looking at aluminum heads because one of my iron heads is cracked in a couple places. Doing 9.25 compression, and shooting for 600-ish hp on boost. Trying to keep it reasonable and reliable.

Unless they've changed the casting, Edelbrock heads need sleeved and sealed to add extra head bolts. Indy's heads don't and can be purchased with holes already machined or can machine yourself if so inclined. I machined my Indy SRs and the block and fit extra head bolts on my street engine ... just because extra clamping is seldom a bad thing and only cost was my time.
If starting with fresh heads, the Indy SRs might be a better starting point for a boosted application as they have a better exhaust than Edelbrock, but will need more work as not well finished out of the box. Hope this helps,RD |
