Guys - My shop manual does not seem to address timing marks on the OHV six in my '59. I do see what looks like a pointer at the top of the vibration damper, but no notch or other mark on the damper itself.
Any ideas? Thanks!

There is a series of four (I think) small notches on the front edge of your damper. They should be pictured either in the engine section, electrical section or the tune-up section of your TSM. Clean the front edge of the damper thoroughly and you should see them. Joe

what Joe says...
the notches are not all that visible especially if the thing is caked in crud as they often are. below are some pics of mine, on car and off, so you can know where to look if it's not in the TSM (i'm not at home now). the "0" mark is just a thin line in the edge. i put a paint pen mark on the beveled edge to enhance visilbility. you might have to wire brush the thing from below to find it. be warned, it is not rare that the mark is in the wrong place -- as crazy as that sounds. the rubber in the damper can go bad, and the outer ring shift position. i'm doing un-natural things to the motor in these pics, but the stock balancer is there to be seen. these images are very high resolution, if they dont look it, click the image it should expand. http://195.6ohv.com/images/DSCN9024.JPG http://195.6ohv.com/images/DSCN8968.JPG |

Very helpful, Tom! I've also found a stripe of paint helps, once located. Will do that. Thanks for the pics!
