Actually, with a full floater housing, you eliminate the ends and use a floater end as a snout which the hubs rotates on.  That hub is driven by an axle that is splined on both ends, and the wheel actually mounts to the hub which rides on the snout.  This takes the weight and force of the car itself off of the axle and on the tube of the housing.  The axle only has to deal with rotational force of turning the wheel, but not the cars weight and forces.  Here's a pic below.

But yes, 9's do offer a lot of choices and quick change options.  The 20 has less drag and offers a little cool factor for being different...which is probably why most of us like our AMC's and don't trade them off for brand X.

I know its an old post but got to chime in. I've had Moser make all my axles through the years and have had excellent workmanship. Even had them done on my 72 401 Matador. Do watch out for the directions on the placement of the axle bearing and outer race. I have an old set of directions from Moser on the placement. The bearings taper points to the tire the thick part of the outer race also points to the tire the thicker part of the inner cone points towards the inner axle/carrier. The directions now are very very vague and I see a lot of Jeep guys installing them backwards. I even spoke to someone at one of these 4x4 companies since there video shows them installing then backwards. they say they have a special kind of bearing that works independently of the other bearing and doesn't rely on the semi floating design of the AMC 20. They say its like the Dana 60 design. Well dana 60 are semi floating axles (in cars) full floating in trucks. and are the same as the AMC 20. Here is an old pic of how it should be done. Oh tapered bearings can NOT be used unless with another tapered bearing.

It is if in an area with alot of the racers in it.  Found a Grand National FF 9" with discs/31 spline with a 5x5-5/8" studs for 300 bucks.  Just had to weld new perches on.  Had a center section with 4.38's and a Eaton locker from another project to throw in it.

Jeeper wants to use the original AMC 20. But looks like floaters are not made anymore. suggest one piece axles and use the semi floating design. This way you avoid the expense in having to re-gear to match the front axle. Many times I have been approached and asked how much to change out gears in a 4x4. They freak at the cost because they didn't realize that the front gears must be swapped also.

FWIW, I installed a pair of one piece axles from Dr. Diff. Just had to cut them to length per the instructions provided. And the AMC outer seals are not used. The axles come with bearing, retainers and inner seals. Bearings are ball bearings so are not the best setup for side loads as in road racing or autocross.

If you want a floater for an AMC 20 plan to put Ford 9" parts on the end of your tubes. I would think Speedway motors can sell you the ends and getting the axle shafts made is an easy part of the equation.
