Thank you sir!! Yeah, this 64 was a barn find, it has 25,000 original miles!! But it has set for 30 yrs or so. I just got her all finished up, and realized, I never touched the rear bearings! Figures, after I put new brakes, drums, lines, new gear oil in the rear diff! Then it occurs to me!! Dummy me!! Or what an idiot as I stated to myself numerous times! Lol, but this is my first classic car, and learn as I go! And all you guys on this forum are awesome, and a huge thank you goes out to you all!! Now I have to gather up some parts, tools, and get down to it and get er done!!

Hey, all is not lost - you ASKED.
We all learn - constantly. I figure the day I don't learn at least one new thing - there must be a few feet of dirt over me. I loved my Rambler - it was comfortable as heck, rode nice, handled nice, was smooth and strong and reliable. The 63 Classic was Motor Trend car of the year and the 64 didn't change all that much - the grill was flat instead of the V shape, that sort of thing. I liked the reclining seats - mine were silver and black "buckets".

You can pull the axle and grease the bearings good enough without pulling the hubs, but will need to pull the hubs to change the bearings or outer seal. You can change the inner seal with the axle/hub assembly out, but the outer seal, being somewhat exposed, is the one that is more likely to fail. If you ever remove the hub replace the outer bearing no matter what... it's a better safe than sorry thing, and seals are relatively cheap.

And just a PS: If you're going top remove the rear seals and/or bearings, you'll need to get the hubs pressed off. If you need to do that, you need to remove the big nut on the end first with everything else together. I broke mine loose with the vehicle still on the ground. (I didn't do that the first time and the machine shop complained to me when they had to find a way to do it.)

Having owned taperd axle cars before, I used my three-legged puller and 4 lb. hammer to whack away 'till the hub popped off. Monday I'll visit my local machine shop to have the old bearing pressed off and a new one installed. Hoping my local parts dealer can get replacement seals. If not, thank heavens for Ebay. :-)
