I have a couple of questions...How well do the cast 360 cranks hold up? What rpm limit would you put on this combo? Could I use a forged 401 crank to get the same 383 ci but with more strength? I am looking to build something different and this intrigues the heck outta me!

.How well do the cast 360 cranks hold up?
I have never heard of anyone breaking one.

What rpm limit would you put on this combo?
6500/7000 rpm but, I would limit it to 6000.

Could I use a forged 401 crank to get the same 383 ci but with more strength?
A forged crank is inhearently stronger than a cast crank hence the reason for one.
I have built a couple of those too but photosucket stole my pictures,

The 390/401 cranks works great for this application but even better.  I bought a "scrap" 390 crank that had a very ugly rod journal from a spun bearing for $50 and used it in my son's 360 stroker engine.  Make the journals 2.00" and use standard 6.00" SBC rods.  On top I used 400 SCB pistons that I cut a valve pocket in.  Came out at 385 inches and 12.5 cr.

So am I reading this correctly you went .070 over on a 360 to fit basically a .030 400 sbc piston . I have done close to this going to a 4.125 bore with the 390 crank and having it offset ground to fit the sbc rods and coming up with around 409 cid . If I knew I would of went larger when I did mine

Sort of... The first one I built I did use +.030" 400 chevy pistons at 4.155" bore and had Stickshifter cut the correct valve reliefs in. The problem was, they were hyperutectic pistons which do not like detonatio so, I broke a piston. From then forward, I have forged pistons made to specification. Problem solved. The common 4.155" bore allows for better ring choices. Plus, most 360 blocks could even go to the 390/401 bore at 4.165" if the engine has to be gone through again.

Ok wish I knew that . When mine was done in the early 90’s the shop that did my motor did a lot of dirt track motors and my pistons and rods were out of one of there motors so I got a decent deal on parts

It's alive.  360 bored and stroked to 383 cubes, Comp 270H cam, Air Gap intake.

Coolant passages flushed 4 times, antifreeze added, 2 gallons of gas ran through it, time to re-torque head bolts and change the oil and install a MSD distributor.  This engine will end up with fuel injection.
