Yeah, getting to the valves to adjust in the little American with L-head was a nightmare!! I only did it once with the engine in the car. You have to be a contortionist! Tried with engine hot as suggested, and quit! You can get to the first couple, but after that it's near impossible with engine running -- tight spaces and the exhaust manifold right there above the valves. Finally just did it with engine cold, added 0.002 to the factory settings (I think 0.002 is correct...). Ran fine for a year, then I parked it. Only ran a flat-head for a couple years. Once I got an OHV I just couldn't go back to a flat-head 196, not for a daily driver or anything I'd want to take on a long trip! I seriously considered the turbo idea until I did the math... would still be a real cool looking thing!! Stick a 172 or 184 crank in to turn up quicker and bore it 1/8"... but I think you'd need custom pistons and cost would be a bit on the high side for a 150 hp near 600# engine...
