My recently acquired SC/R is rolling on 215/70/14 Goodyear Eagles that are about 15 years old.
As I nudge the car into better shape these will quickly be a problem! I could just update the tires but it seems 2005+ Mustang wheels, often with decent tires, are all over Craigslist. 235/55/17s are remarkably close to my old 14s. (The car has 4.10s instead of the stock 3.54, so the speedometer is already so far off it’s not relevant!) I had access to a set of these to test fit and as the wiser of you already know the wheel offsets are all wrong. The new wheels are much flatter and correspondingly will bolt on much deeper... so I’ll need spacers if they’re going to work. Has anybody had success mounting late-model Mustang wheels? Any guidance on the spacers? Or... by the time I get longer studs, sort out the spacers, etc am I better off going a different, more traditional route? With the limited supply of small rubber and my preference for some chrome wheels, this idea seemed to have potential. Given the age of the current tires this is one of my top to-do items! Thanks from a new guy. |

I was thinking about that swap, too. I have a 1973 Javelin rear that is about 5 inches wider than the American rear, so if I install it the wheels would be a closer fit. I don’t know if I would have enough clearance to get the wheels on and off from the car and what to do for the fronts, so it is just a thought so far.

I’ve always wanted a set of Cragar S/S wheels and just never had the right car for them. The Mustang wheel idea isn’t sounding simple and 2” spacers seem extreme... no decisions yet but I’m leaning towards a more traditional path... maybe 15’s though instead of the 14’s.

It's an SC/R. Get chrome Magnum 500s in the size you want, paint the black to the proper blue, and get the aftermarket center cap art.
Best of both worlds for you and your respectfully non-stock SC/R. |

Had the SC on a lift yesterday and there’s certainly not much room for tires!
The 17’s don’t seem practical and may not even be possible. Would 15x6 Cragars with 215/60/15 fronts and 235/60/15 rears seem reasonable? Would 15x7 be better? |

2" bolt-on spacers are fine. They have holes for the original lugs and nut, new studs between the old holes. Usually a solid high grade aluminum. Pretty cheap now!

Or you would need lower sidewalls. Your two factors are tire height (diameter) and tire width. Determine those, and go from there keeping in mind you may have some wiggle room with width depending on your wheel (rim) setback. The first chart is BF Goodrich and has all the various size details, the second is comparative across numeric, alpha numeric and P-metric. http://www.buicks.net/shop/reference/tires.html#chart http://www.turbinecar.com/tires.htm |
