Three years ago, due to circumstances beyond my control I abruptly stopped rebuilding my 68 AMX 390 after installing the crank, pistons, and cam. Yesterday and today, I managed to find all the parts to install on the front face of the block: cam & crank sprockets, locating dowels, fuel pump concentric & drive gear, oil slinger, etc. I was unsure how to reassemble. Fortunately had pix (left, top, and right side) on my lap top of every step of disassembly. Phew! Today, installed everything that goes behind the timing cover. Next is clean the distributor and trial fit it with the new oil pump with matching gears and Bulltear timing cover. I recall you have to pack the oil pump with petroleum jelly to help prime the pump, I do have a oil pump primer shaft for that too. The timing sprocket marks were lined up and # 1 piston was a TDC. Then moved cam sprocket timing mark to the 3 o'clock position and counted 20 pins to the crank sprocket. Here's a pic of today's progress:

Did you make sure the oil holes are aligned between the camshaft and timing gear, near every set I have installed over last several years I found them to be off and partially or fully blocking oil from reaching the dist drive gear. i know that there are several threads on here...do some research before you stick that timing cover on.....

I found what I call "flashing" next to the holes that could restrict oil. I made sure I traced all oil passages and that the holes were lined up and open.. Remove rough spots or restrictions in and around the holes to ensure oil flow. That's where much of the trouble comes in - unclean passages, etc.

Thank you for the suggestions. I looked at all the oil passages and the holes were lined up and without obstructions, rough spots, restrictions in and around the holes. The slot inside the timing gear was not obstructed by the casting. Passages were clean. Inserted a small drill bit in the drive gear holes and they were clean. The cam and crank sprockets are TRW. The new cam is a Performer Edelbrock. All the parts seem compatible. Glad you recommended checking for these possible pitfalls for peace of mind. I was able to find several threads on the forum concerning the aforementioned. Thanks again!
