    Posted: Feb/12/2018 at 11:19am
I'm starting a performance 401 build for my car. It's has the stock '74 727 in it. The 401 came out of a '77 J10 or 20 with a TH400. My question is will the 401 crank flange work for my '74 727 flexplate? I have read that it will if you remove something but I dont recall what,.. any comments?

your need to remove the converter bushing in the end of the crank.
it would remind you of a cam bearing. th400 converter has a smaller diameter nose than a torqueflite that's why it has the bushing

As long as the 727 flex plate is for a 401.

Remember, all gen2 and 3 AMC V8s are externally balanced.

I'm also putting together a 401 that was formerly mated to a th400. It will be now mated to a TF so my question is where do I find a 401/tf flex plate and is it easy to tell the difference between the two.(I have the orignal th400 flexplate) Thanks - Greg

JEGS & Summit Racing have them & most local parts stores for stock applications.

I'm looking at this one for my build

The factory TF flexplate is almost solid.  The TH400 flexplate has slots in it so it looks like it has 3 arms.  I have a couple of 401 flexplates for the TH400.
